We are proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Fusion Labs and the Young Emerging Farmers Initiative (YEFI), marking the beginning of a bold collaboration aimed at addressing Zambia’s most urgent national challenges – youth unemployment, food insecurity, and soil degradation.
Founded in 2014, YEFI now has over 500,000 youth members and more than 50,000 active farmers across Zambia. YEFI is committed to empowering young people through hands-on training in sustainable agriculture. From Mkushi to Serenje to the remote communities of Northwestern Province, YEFI travels the length and breadth of the nation, equipping youth with the practical skills to establish their own agribusinesses, build financial independence, and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
At a time when the majority of Zambia’s population is under the age of 30, yet formal employment opportunities remain scarce, this partnership could not be more urgent. Agriculture holds immense promise for reversing youth unemployment – but only if it is backed by modern science, innovation, and sustainable practices.
Soil health lies at the heart of sustainable agriculture, yet much of the world is losing fertile land at an alarming rate. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, the equivalent of one football pitch of soil is eroded globally every five seconds. A 2020 UN report highlighted that over 15% of Zambian farming land had already experienced reduced fertility due to unchecked nutrient depletion. Fusion Labs is determined to help reverse this trend through advanced soil testing for YEFI farmers, data-driven soil remediation strategies, and regenerative agricultural practices that restore soil structure, rebuild microbial life, and maximise yields.
By combining YEFI’s expansive grassroots reach with Fusion Labs’ cutting-edge scientific capabilities, we are sowing the seeds of a food-secure, economically empowered Zambia – led by a new generation of young agricultural entrepreneurs.
